Graphic Novels : Justice Society of America, Thy Kingdom Come, Part One

A very long title, but a brightly coloured almost gentle tale, but it isn't. The arrival of a new Superman, a damaged Superman and has he stated to the JSA members, "I watched all of you die" always means something bad. I always like a darker Superman, it makes for better reading. Part One is only the start of something great, I am sure of that!

Graphic Novels : Zombie Cop

Writer Jeff Mariotte is probably more famous for his novels expanding the Buffy, Angel universes, but Zombie Cop is not his first comic. Zombie Cop is as Jeff states at the beginning a dedication to George Romero and I think the story does a fair job. The story follows Joe Mundy, a cop, a zombie cop, who is infected early on and will not let himself change until he has solved the mystery. Take it or leave it, it is good pretty enjoyable romp and the art is suitable pretty.

Graphic Novels : Dicks

Garth Ennis and John McCrea's Dicks, how best to describe this is a big question! I think, I could call it Northern Irish Viz, but the language style of these stories often left me struggling a little to follow and even with its handy Dick-tionary, I am not sure I can handle this many penis jokes. However, I found the short interludes of "Trio", "Great Belfastmen in History", "Just Gimme A Beer" plus "Bad Ideas for Superheroes", very crude and very funny. Garth and John clearly set out to offend and succeed!

Graphic Novels : Fused, Canned Heat! & Think Like A Machine

Fused is Steve Niles short lived tale of Mark Haggerty, a robotics scientist, who is fused to his creation the Cy-bot suit, a machine of great power. Problem is Mark is a happily married man and this development puts a fair amount of stress on his marriage. Coupled with the fact the machine is reconstructing him an organ at a time! This comic had the capacity to become a classic, however, I think it came across as too generic.

Graphic Novels : Lazarus Churchyard, The Final Cut

Back in 1991, I was one of those lucky enough to collect and read "Blast!", a biweekly magazine aimed at the more mature reader. Unfortunately, Blast! did not last long, but at least it gave Warren Ellis a chance to release Lazarus Churchyard into the world. Nearly ten years later Image Comics republished "Lazarus Churchyard, The Final Cut". The comic follows the story of Lazarus, a four hundred year old Scot, who was part of a plasborging experiment, that allows him to survive almost anything including death and that is all Lazarus wants now. I personally believe that this comic has not dated and is as special as when it was first released.

Graphic Novels : Hulk, The End

Nothing is left, no humans, no heroes and no villians. Only the Bruce Banner and his Hulk remain, wandering the Earth. As a fan of the Hulk, this novels is one of favourites, it finally proves if Hulk is the strongest, can he survive the ultimate test, time itself! David Peter's writting is excellent and the story is strong, even the title of the first book is perfect. "The Last Titan".

Graphic Novels : Platinum Grit

I brought the first volume of Platinum Grit after reading the webcomic as I liked the curvaceous, brilliant Nils and sadly love struck Jeremy. The quality of the art is superb, the writing witty and clever, but I kept wanting to shout "Girl Power!". I think, I needed to skip volume 1 in favour of a later additions as I only started reading online about a year ago and I think the writing style of mid-ninties really shows.

Graphic Novels : Blackest Night

I know Marvel beat DC Comics to zombie heroes, but I am very excited by idea of the Blackest Night series from DC Comics.

Check out Superman below as member of the undead and is he about to dig up Jonathan Kent?

Graphic Novels : Marvel Zombies

Marvel Zombies is wonderful alternate Universe. Where some of the greatest Marvel heroes are left, but unfortunately they are now zombies and very hungry. After eating almost everything on the planet, they hunt the last surviving heroes then the appearance of the Silver Surfer heralds the arrival of Galactus then things get very interesting. Written by Robert Kirkman, famed for The Walking Dead, Marvel kept pushing him to push the very limits of what Marvel had done before, they wanted more blood, more gore and more outrageous behaviour. It worked, I suspect this saga will go on and on.

Graphic Novels : Watchmen

It was a given that I was going to comment on the Watchmen and for the record, I believe the movie did a lot to open public eyes to the more mature comic world. However, the producers of the movie sacrificed much of the novels content and as a fan of the novel since it first publication, I find it almost unforgettable, especially the end. Alan Moore's graphic novel is truly amazing and worth reading without the addition of a block buster movie.
